Grace Joel (1865-1924) was born in Dunedin, studying art both there and in Melbourne before leaving for Europe where she attended the Julian Academy in Paris. She exhibited paintings in New Zealand, and in Australia, in London and in Paris: in 1921 she was chosen as one of "five women painters worthy of note". Joel's characteristic paintings are mother and child compositions. The one reproduction print of a Grace Joel painting "Rose with Poppies" is currently out of print. However it may become available again after the Christchurch Art Gallery re-opens after earthquake repairs (we are sure they have stock of this classic print stored somewhere!).
