Grace Joel

Grace Joel

Grace Joel (1865-1924) was born in Dunedin, studying art both there and in Melbourne before leaving for Europe where she attended the Julian Academy in Paris. She exhibited paintings in New Zealand, and in Australia, in London and in Paris: in 1921 she was chosen as one of "five women painters worthy of note". Joel's characteristic paintings are mother and child compositions. The one reproduction print of a Grace Joel painting "Rose with Poppies" is currently out of print. We were sure it would become available again after the Christchurch Art Gallery re-opened after earthquake repairs but it has not been re-printed again.
