John Singer Sargent

John Singer Sargent

John Singer Sargent (1856-1925) was born in Italy of American parents who spent much of their lives travelling. He began formal study in Paris at 19, and did not see the United States until his early 20s. Returning to Europe, he visited Spain and North America before opening his own studio in Paris in 1881. In 1884 one of his portraits was deemed "too realistic", and in response Sargent left Paris to make his base in London. He devoted his career to painting portraits of the wealthy and powerful international set in which he moved. Imported from the US the Sargent prints in stock at NZ Fine Prints includes possibly his most famous painting, the “Oyster Gatherers”.
