Claus Fristrom

Claus Edward Fristrom (1864-1942), Swedish by birth, arrived in New Zealand via Australia, where he was active in artistic circles. A teacher at the Elam School of Fine Arts, Auckland, from 1911-1915, Fristrom visited and painted in other North Island centres before moving to the USA after the First World War. An oil painter whose portraits and landscapes are in the art nouveau style, he is widely represented in major New Zealand galleries. A print of Fristrom’s painting of Motutapu Island was published by the Capper Press.
