Craig Potton
Posters by Nelson photographer Craig Potton represent the best of contemporary New Zealand nature photography at a very affordable price. Potton is a well known conservationist and the co-owner of one of New Zealand's most successful independent book publishers, Craig Potton Publishing. In pursuit of his photography Potton has tramped and climbed extensively in New Zealand, the sub-Antarctic Islands, the Dry Valleys of Antarctica, the Nepal Himalaya, and Iceland. For nearly 40 years he has documented the New Zealand wilderness, exploring relationships between the concept of artistic beauty and wilderness in the natural world. In recent years Craig has worked as a Location/Stills Photographer on The Lord of the Rings, Peter Pan and The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe motion pictures. His reputation for fine art photography continues to grow, with recent exhibitions at Christchurch Art Gallery, National Gallery of Australia in Canberra, a major retrospective at the Rowe Gallery, North Carolina, USA, and major exhibitions in Poland and Israel.
In his book Moment & Memory Potton writes "A good photo can sometimes be an arrow to the heart of things, alluding to or eliciting an immediate encounter. It is the nature of art and the way of nature to push us beyond the narrow realities we often become trapped in, to new or forgotten realms of pleasure." We have recently finished cataloguing all of Potton's photographic posters - his work features in our New Zealand Photography Posters gallery at NZ Fine Prints.
