Ralph Hotere

Ralph Hotere (1931- ) was born in the Hokianga but studied art in Dunedin, having his first one-man show there in 1952. From 1960 for almost five years Hotere travelled around Europe, studying and exhibiting paintings which included the Sangro series, a tribute to his brother, a member of the Maori Battalion who had been killed in Italy. After returning to New Zealand, and winning the 1969 Frances Hodgkins Fellowship, Ralph Hotere settled at Carey's Bay near Dunedin. Hotere's works have included not only oils on canvas, but steel, hardboard and roofing iron; and his tools range from brushes to blowtorches to fine gold leaf.

We have a brand new print of the Ralph Hotere Painting Dawn/Water Poem in stock.
