Painted while she accompanied her husband, the artist Diego Rivera, to New York while he worked on his infamous mural for the Rockefeller Center. The simplicity of her traditional Mexican dress is contrasted with the decadence of New York. Painted at the height of the 1930s depression this painting is a powerful commentary on what she saw as the failure of captialism. The sense of alienation from her surroundings surely depicts Kahlo’s yearning to be back home in her native Mexico. This print is from a UK publisher, the original painting is now in the collection of the Banco de Mexico.
