Print of Antique New Zealand Map
Image size in millimetres: 300 x 400
This delightfully illustrated early coloured map of New Zealand has been re-published in a small edition by Thorndon Fine Prints. New Zealand by John Rapkin is one of the most attractive and decorative maps relating to the colonisation and settlement of New Zealand. Published originally in 1851 as one of eighty-one illustrations in the Tallis Illustrated Atlas and Modern History of the World. The vignettes (small illustrations) are of Auckland Harbour, Mt Egmont [Taranaki] from New Plymouth and the New Zealand Company Seal. In the map New Zealand is divided into New Munster, New Ulster and New Leinster. These divisions were created in 1848 and replaced by the six provinces created by the 1852 Constitution Act.
