New publication, limited edition screenprint of Michael Smither’s 1971 painting “Family in the Van”. Smither references the forms of the Otago landscape from a painting by Colin McCahon in the background of a scene from a family holiday, his wife Elizabeth and two older children on a road trip. The painter’s autobiographical work is, according to curator Rob Garrett’s notes to accompany this painting when it was sold at Art and Object’s single vendor sale of the The Les and Milly Paris Collection “generous and relaxed, eschewing conventional portraiture”, and he quotes the artist saying about these works “We had a very restricted view of children. We used to have these photographers that went from home to home doing photographs of your children. They spent ages getting the children all flossied up and looking perfect and posing them in front of the fireplace. It was totally unlike what children are really like.”
