Unusually for a New Zealand artist Moffitt would focus on people centred stories, myths and legends rather than hewing to the landscape tradition. In the mid 1960s his McKenzie series was inspired by sheep rustler James McKenzie. The MacKenzie Country (using an alternative spelling) in the South Island is named after this legendary outlaw. This print of Moffit’s “McKenzie the Sheep Stealer” painting was printed by the Caxton Press in Christchurch and there are less than 20 prints to go until it is sold out.
