The backyard series from Dick Frizzell continues with Incinerator. The 44 gallon drum with a hole cut in it for ash removal was the traditional NZ method of disposing of garden trimmings. Like other pop artists Frizzell elevates everyday objects into art by treating them with the same artistic respect that a still life painter would have approached a carefully composed basket of fruit or vase of flowers. In this case his choice of subject is also expressing a particular viewpoint about which everyday NZ items deserve to be celebrated. For decades Frizzell has astutely observed previously under-appreciated icons of our New Zealand identity (most infamously the Tiki, Dick also became so well known for appropriating Mr Foursquare that urban myth is that he designed the original logo!).
