Charles Decimus Barraud was a New Zealand pharmacist and artist who emigrated to New Zealand in 1849.


This early view of Tarawara Lake or Lake Tarawera,  New Zealand,  shows the lake on a moonlight night with some early explorers and Waka (Maori canoe) on the lake.  This view was painted before the lake changed dramatically after the June 1886 eruption of Mount Tarawera. This plate has been extracted from the 1960 edition of Barraud’s “New Zealand: Graphic and Descriptive” originally published in 1877.
