The original Huia, Heteralocha acutirostris, hand-coloured lithograph by Johannes Keulemans was recently scanned at an extremely high resolution and this is the resulting print... The extinct Huia is one of the most popular subjects in NZ avian wall art and this new print brings the colour and definition of the original print truly to life. This illustration was plate 8 from the famous large folio by Walter Buller “A history of the birds of New Zealand”, 1873. For each illustration Keulemans first produced a drawing for Buller’s inspection, then a coloured painting, which served as the basis for each lithograph. This modern re-print is on superb Tintoretto paper stock.
