Georgia O'Keeffe

Georgia O’Keeffe (1887 - 1986) studied a the Art Institute of Chicago and went on to New York’s Art Students League where she won the still-life prize in 1908. However it was a summer course for art teachers at the University of Virginia where she was profoundly influenced by the artist and art educator Arthur Wesley Dow. Dow believed that the goal of art was the expression of the artists personal ideas and feelings rather than the prevailing tradition of “imitative realism”. O’Keeffe’s paintings of large scale flowers were an important part of her output alongside paintings of buildings in New York and her famous paintings of the New Mexico landscape after she began painting there in 1929 (O’Keeffe eventually moved to New Mexico permanently after the death of her art dealer husband in 1946). We always have Georgia O’Keeffe prints in stock, she is part of our non-NZ artist “permanent collection” as she is one of the most outstanding and popular artists of the twentieth century whose work never goes out of style.
