Discovery of Life by Steve Hikaiti
Screenprint
Paper size in millimetres: 405 x 560
Edition of 75 printed, signed and numbered by Steve Hikaiti
This print is based on the Hei Matau which has its origins in the Maori legend of Maui catching the North Island of New Zealand.
Hikaiti writes that "Legend has it that Maui using only a woven line and a bone hook caught a great fish known as Te Ika a Maui. The Hei Matau is therefore a famous taonga (a cultural treasure) for Maori. It represents not only land but also prosperity, fertility and safe passage over water. They also denote the importance of fishing to Maori and their relationship to Tangaroa, god of the sea." In the same way that New Zealand was found by Maui using the Hei Matau it has in turn helped Steve Hikaiti find his art with this first print in his series of original screenprints. This original print is screen-printed by hand onto Artistico Fabriano paper - the finest paper available for original prints.
