Dawn/Water Poem by Ralph Hotere
Fine Art Print
Image size in millimetres: 660 x 900Beautiful large print of Hotere's Dawn/Water Poem painting. The original painting remixes a poem by poet Bill Manhire. It was painted at a time of strong protest against the French nuclear testing programme carried out on the Pacific atoll of Mururoa during the 1980s. Hotere has taken Manhire's poem "Dawn/Water" and transformed it into a visual experience. When the painting was shown at Christchurch Art Gallery it was described in the following terms "The collaboration has produced a pointedly beautiful political statement. In nautical terms, an _x' means _keep away'. To Manhire's repeated word _sunrise' Hotere has added _Mururoa', using a vivid red to suggest apocalypse, anger and sacrifice."
