Dawn/Water Poem by Ralph Hotere
Fine Art PrintImage size in millimetres: 660 x 900
10 May 2017: Please note we are starting to run low on stock of this print, it will soon be going into our endangered collection and once it has sold out the publisher is not re-printing. Beautiful large print of Hotere's Dawn/Water Poem painting. The original painting remixes a poem by poet Bill Manhire. It was painted at a time of strong protest against the French nuclear testing programme carried out on the Pacific atoll of Mururoa during the 1980s. Hotere has taken Manhire's poem "Dawn/Water" and transformed it into a visual experience. When the painting was shown at Christchurch Art Gallery it was described in the following terms "The collaboration has produced a pointedly beautiful political statement. In nautical terms, an 'x' means 'keep away'. To Manhire's repeated word 'sunrise' Hotere has added 'Mururoa', using a vivid red to suggest apocalypse, anger and sacrifice."
This is one of only two prints of a Ralph Hotere painting currently available. We have similar prints of work by important NZ artists like Hotere for sale in these collections at New Zealand's specialist art print store:
