William Hodgkins

William Mathew Hodgkins (1839-1898), father of Frances, arrived in Dunedin in 1860, where he practised as a barrister. A founder member of the Otago Art Society in 1876, he was a prolific watercolourist, and his daughters Frances and Isabel were both encouraged to paint. He exhibited with the Otago Art Society for more than twenty years, and also in Melbourne. His paintings are held in most major New Zealand galleries.
