E. A. Gifford

Edward Augustus Gifford, RA (1819-1894) won a gold medal at the Royal Academy School before travelling in Europe and later to Australia, from whence he came to New Zealand in 1877.

He spent most of the next twenty years in Oamaru. He painted in both watercolour and oils, and exhibited portraits and landscapes in major national and international exhibitions. Represented in most major New Zealand galleries, this early view of Auckland is from the Auckland Art Gallery collection.
