Ghirlandaio, Domenico
Domenico Ghirlandaio (Domenico de Tomaso Bigordi) (1449-1494) was a Florentine whose acquired name came from his early training as a goldsmith, when he made garlands and wreaths for customers. Although he painted altarpieces and superb portraits, he is best known for his frescoes in churches and in the homes of wealthy merchants in Florence and Rome. Ghirlandaio maintained a large workshop with dozens of assistants, among whom, towards the end of his career, was the young apprentice Michelangelo.
