Louis Eilshemius

Louis Eilshemius (1864-1941), an American, was born into a wealthy family, which enabled him to travel to Europe where he studied under Bouguereau in Paris. Most of the next twenty years he spent travelling and painting: in Europe, the Pacific, Africa and the United States. He met Duchamp, with whom he exhibited in Paris in 1917, and also in Paris had his first one-man show in 1921. He was recognised as an "American romantic" in Europe long before he gained a reputation in America.
