Rob Brown

Christchurch photographer Rob Brown has been tramping, climbing and skiing in the New Zealand back-country for over fifteen years. Brown's interest in photography came about from his early experiences in the New Zealand mountains while at university. Early in the 1990's he asked his local camera shop to order a large-format field camera, sight unseen, which he then had to teach himself to use. The same camera is still in use today and the same camera shop supplies the film. In 1999 he co-authored his first book Classic Tramping in New Zealand with long time friend and fellow tramper Shaun Barnett - Classic Tramping went on to win the environment section of the 2000 Montana Book Awards. Since 2001 he has divided his time between wandering the wilder places of New Zealand, writing, conservation work and the realities of running a small, fledgling photography business. His latest book, Shelter from the Storm, was published in 2012. His photographs have regularly featured in a wide range of books, magazines and calendars
