The huia, now extinct, was treasured by Maori for its tail feathers, used to denote high rank when worn in the hair. This historical NZ print shows the image of Heteralocha acutirostris first published in Buller’s Birds, second edition, in 1888. The birds are shown perched on a titoki branch.
