Interior of a Native Village by John Gilfillan
Artist: John Gilfillan
Title: Interior of a Native Village
Image size in millimetres: 380 x 500
Limited Edition of 1000. Fine Art Print. New Zealand Artist
This print is one of the finest representations of a Maori village, and shows a typical scene in daily life, with the Maori people as yet little effected by contact with Europeans. The Pa is reputed to be Putiki-whara-nui on the Wanganui River. The painting itself is lost. There were reputedly fifty prints made, 25 of which were sent to Sir George Grey for distribution to colonists and the remainder were sold in London to help mission work in New Zealand. It is interesting that all known copies of the original print bear the word ðProofð.
